Environment
We recognise climate change as being a major issue, where International Power has an important part to play in managing its emissions, primarily of carbon dioxide.
Our strategy towards dealing with climate change has three main elements, namely;
- to increase the thermal efficiency of our assets;
- to seek viable opportunities for the increased use of renewables in our generation portfolio; and
- to seek project development opportunities, which we can use to offset carbon dioxide emissions.
During 2006 we achieved improvements in our environmental performance by utilising the latest technology and optimising the way we operate our assets. As an energy company we provide electricity, heat, steam and water to our customers. In order to consider all process outputs and provide a more accurate representation of our total emissions, in 2005 we developed a methodology which has allowed us to calculate our data normalised by kWh equivalent. Data for 2004 onwards has now been calculated on an equivalent basis.
We believe that our performance demonstrates our committed approach with reductions in our net CO2/kWh over the last two years, from 0.889 kg of CO2/kWh in 2004, to 0.715 kg of CO2/kWh in 2006. We use net reporting of CO2, which reflects our ownership interest in an asset.
International Power has endorsed the 'The Path to Climate Sustainability' which is a joint statement by the Global Roundtable on Climate Change (GROCC).
